The Whys of Being Wise

Why are there two kinds of wisdom? Shouldn’t one kind be sufficient? Is it not enough that we are smart, intelligent and capable of making our own decisions? According to the Bible, no!

James plainly states that there are two kinds of wisdom — earthly and heavenly. “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such ‘wisdom’ does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice” (James 3:13-16 NIV1984).

Why isearthly wisdom associated with disorder and every evil practice? Because of its author — Satan (Gen. 3:1-6). It characterizes selfish ambition, envy and boasting. It appeals to the senses and builds up ego and pride. It desires approval, attention, honor and sometimes self-worship. It says follow your heart, but “The heart is deceitful above all thing and beyond cure…” (Jer. 17:9). Worldly wisdom attacks us with well-meaning advice, images and ideals to distract us from the truth of God’s Word.

While there is nothing wrong with seeking knowledge and understanding of various subjects, it is important to realize that knowledge and true wisdom are distinct in nature. “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight…” (I Cor. 3:19).

Why is being spiritually wise considered a gift from God? Because when He grants such wisdom, it reflects His nature. As the recipients, we exhibit His attributes. “But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness” (James 3:17-18). Are any of these qualities seen in self-proclaimed wise individuals?

Why isn’t spiritual wisdom bestowed upon us the moment we are saved? Because, like newborn babies, we don’t realize the need for divine wisdom. Only as we grow in Christ do we know that we need it at home, work, school, church and everywhere we go and in everything we do. But how and where can we lay claim to it?

It comes from God and is available for the asking — “…If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5). When we receive God’s wisdom, the characteristics (as outlined in James 3:17-18) will be evident in our actions.

Why is wisdom considered a hidden treasure? “If you accept my words… turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God… Then you will understand what is right and just and fair — every good path” (Prov. 2:1-5, 9).

Why is wisdom “…more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her”? Because “…her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed” (Prov. 3:15-18).

Even knowing and understanding the “whys of being wise,” when we simply don’t know what to do and are unsure how to respond, God invites us to come to Him where wisdom is given freely for the asking!
