CBC SPORTS: Men’s Basketball Advances to Semi-Finals

Men’s Basketball

         • Conway, Feb. 27 — Opening play in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Tournament, presented by Tandem HR at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse, #15 CBC, the #2 seed, hosted the #7 seed Mission University Patriots in the AMC quarterfinals. CBC (25-4) never trailed, knocking Mission (8-18) out of the tournament by a score of 83-76 to reach the semifinals for the eighth consecutive season. Three Mustangs scored in double figures, led by Sage Borbon, an AMC first team selection, who contributed 25 points. AMC Defensive Player of the Year, first team selection and all-defensive team selection Jonas Carlisle added 14 points, while AMC Sixth Man of the Year Brian Alexander contributed 12 off the bench. Alexander, Carlisle, second team selection Wade Williams and honorable mention selection Gabe Johnson all tied for the team lead with seven rebounds each, while all-defensive team selection Devin Foster recorded four blocked shots. CBC’s defense was key, limiting Mission to 35% shooting from the field and just 4-of-23 from beyond the arc. CBC led 40-28 at halftime and never allowed Mission to close the gap to fewer than six points during the second half.

         • Conway, March 1 — After a hard-fought win to kick off the AMC Tournament presented by Tandem HR, #15 CBC hosted the Columbia Cougars (CC) for the second time in nine days, this time in the semifinals. CBC (26-4) never trailed, leading by as many as 16 points before fending off a strong effort from CC (22-8) to secure a 78-74 victory and advance to the AMC Tournament Championship game for the fourth time in five years. Sage Borbon led the Mustangs in scoring with 22 points while Devin Foster chipped in with 13 off the bench, Gabe Johnson added 12 and Wade Williams had 10. CBC made 11 three-point field goals, which made the difference in the game.

Softball

         • Conway, Feb. 27 — Playing at the friendly confines of City of Colleges Park for the first time this season, CBC hosted the Lions of Nelson University (NU). CBC (6-12) swept the doubleheader from NU (3-7), taking game one 2-1 before winning game two 4-3 on a walk-off.

         • Springfield, Mo., March 1 — Following a home-opening sweep, CBC was back on the road at the University Softball Field for a doubleheader against Evangel. CBC (7-13) split the double dip with EU (10-4) winning game one 3-1 before dropping game two 8-2.

Baseball

         • North Little Rock, March 1 — Following a split in the first two games of their AMC series against the Columbia Cougars (CC), CBC looked to win both games and capture the series from CC. CBC (8-10, 6-2 AMC) earned the series split, winning game one 4-3 in walk-off fashion before falling 8-6 in game two.

Track & Field

         • Conway, March 1 — Competing outdoors for the first time this season, CBC attended the Hendrix Invitational. Five men participated: Josh Brown and Kortney Embry both ran the 110-meter hurdles, with Brown finishing in 15.85 seconds and Embry in 16.89 seconds. Brown and Solomon Barnes contended in the 400 hurdles, with Brown clocking in at 1:01.30 and Barnes at 1:02.52. Barnes also took part in the long jump and triple jump, achieving a distance of 5.89 meters in the long jump and setting a new program record of 13.26 meters in the triple jump. Evan East competed in the 200-meter dash, finishing with a time of 23.16 seconds, while Chris Palmer ran the 5000-meter race and established a new program record for the fastest time, crossing the finish line in 16:26.11 minutes. On the women’s side, Mackenzie Milligan ran the women’s 800 meters, clocking in at 3:08.00, and Lindsey Risner completed the 200 meters with a time of 35.37 seconds.
