CBC SPORTS UPDATE: February 8, 2023

Men’s Basketball

• Conway, Feb. 2 — Trailing 4-0 inside the first two-and-a-half minutes, CBC exploded from there, using a 38-0 run to put their American Midwest Conference (AMC) game with Hannibal-LaGrange at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse out of reach. CBC (16-8, 8-4 AMC) led 55-22 at the half and cruised to a 105-59 win over HLGU (7-12, 2-9 AMC). The 38 consecutive points are the most ever scored by a Mustang team consecutively in the program’s history and spanned nine minutes and 47 seconds of game time. Three Mustangs were in double figures  — Brevin Brimble (23), Jalen Adams (19) and Braylon Steen (10).

• Fulton, Mo., Feb. 4 — Looking for an AMC season sweep, CBC was on the court at Anderson Arena for a clash at William Woods. CBC (16-9, 8-5 AMC) couldn’t hold William Woods’ (12-10, 6-6 AMC) late surge and dropped the contest 73-70. Gabe Johnson led the Mustangs with a career-high 23 points, while James Moore added 13 and Brevin Brimble had 11.

Women’s Basketball

• Conway, Feb. 2 — Looking to bounce back after a tough road trip, CBC hosted the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse, looking for a season sweep in AMC play. CBC (9-11, 4-11 AMC) trailed 34-32 at halftime but got hot in the third quarter and cruised to a 77-61 win over HLGU (4-17, 2-12 AMC). Caroline Citty led the way for CBC with her first career double-double, tying a career-high with 21 points and grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds. She was joined in double figures scoring by Rhys Anderson (14), Diana Rivera (13) and Emma Bates (11).

• Fulton, Mo., Feb. 4 — Coming off a big win in their most recent game, CBC took on the Owls of William Woods inside Anderson Arena for an AMC contest. CBC (9-12, 4-12) trailed by five at halftime and fell to WWU (6-16, 4-11 AMC) by a 57-55 score. Caroline Citty led the way for CBC with 13 points, while Rhys Anderson chipped in with 12 and Diana Rivera added 11.

Softball

• San Antonio, Texas, Feb. 3 — Opening the 2023 season on the road, CBC was on the field at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) to take on the #15 OLLU Saints and the Jaguars of the University of Houston-Victoria. CBC (1-2) dropped the first two contests, but won the third contest behind timely hitting and great pitching.

• San Antonio, Texas, Feb. 4 — Looking to salvage a split on the final day of the OLLU Classic, CBC was on Saints Field for their final two games against #15 OLLU. CBC (2-3) would accomplish their goal, losing game one to OLLU (2-1) 6-5 before taking the final game 8-4.

Wrestling

• Lebanon, Tenn., Feb. 4 — Competing for the final time in an open meet this season, CBC was on the mat at Dallas Green Phoenix Arena for the Cumberland Open. CBC saw two wrestlers finish in placement spots, with David Corretjer placing third at 125 pounds and Darron Harvey finishing second at 285 pounds.

Baseball

• Benton, Feb. 5 — Opening the 2023 season a day later than originally scheduled, CBC hosted the Buffaloes of Arkansas Baptist College (ABC) at Benton High School. CBC (2-0) pushed 30 runs across the plate in a doubleheader sweep, beating ABC (0-2) by scores of 20-0 and 10-0. In the season-opening 20-0 win, CBC got the fifth no-hitter in program history and the second combined no-hitter (also the first in the opening game) from Austin LeJeune and Caleb Sollars. The Mustangs also scored 20 runs or more for the sixth time in program history and put up 20 runs in a shutout for the third time in program history. CBC also hit for the cycle in the second inning of game one (single by Danilo Taborda, triple by Ruben Hernandez, double by Austin Teal and home run by Gabe Walker).

• St. Louis, Mo., Feb. 6 — The AMC released their preseason coaches’ poll and CBC was picked fourth by the AMC coaches. CBC received 30 total points in the poll and was picked behind defending champion Columbia, Missouri Baptist and William Woods.
