CBC SPORTS UPDATE: March 15, 2023

Baseball

• North Little Rock, March 7 — Playing each other for the first time ever, CBC hosted the Panthers of Philander Smith College in a doubleheader at Burns Park. CBC (7-10) took both games of the doubleheader; winning the first game 5-2 and the second one 12-3.

• Little Rock, March 10 — With a conflict on their home field at Burns Park, CBC hosted a doubleheader against Ecclesia (EC) on Comets Field on the campus of Wilbur D. Mills Middle School. CBC (9-10) swept the doubleheader, scoring 24 runs and pounding out 24 hits to crush EC (6-13).

• Conway, March 11 — Looking for a series sweep, CBC was back on DeJanis Memorial Field at DeSalvo Memorial Stadium for the final two games of their four-game series with Ecclesia. CBC (10-11) split on the second day, dropping game one before taking the final game from EC (7-14).

Track & Field

• Conway, March 11 — Competing outdoors for the first time this season, CBC was at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium for the Hendrix Alumni Open. CBC had five athletes who competed. Ally Swaim won the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 17:40. Ashleigh Gross-Mitchell became the first women ever to compete in the long jump, recording a jump of 4.59 meters (15 feet, 0.75 inches). Josh Brown placed 16th in the 100-meter dash, but also recorded the fourth fastest time ever in the 100 hurdles at 17.39. Jadon Price notched a 10.89 mark in the shot put, the fifth longest of all-time. Isaiah Stiger recorded a jump of 5.73 meters, the sixth longest mark ever.

Men’s Golf

• Maumelle, March 13 — Teeing off for the first time since winning their last fall tournament, CBC opened play in the CBC Invitational at the Country Club of Arkansas. The Mustangs hold a 13-shot lead after round one after opening with a seven-over par round of 295. Individually, CBC had five golfers in the top 10. Leopold Maes leads the tournament after shooting an opening round even par 72. Jakub Slapal is tied for second, one shot behind Maes. Kitsakon Jairak is in a tie for sixth after an opening round 75 along with teammate Suraprat Pareepart. Paul Gomez is in ninth after opening with a 78.

Women’s Golf

• Maumelle, March 13 — Teeing off the spring portion of their schedule, CBC was on the course at the Country Club of Arkansas for the first round of the 2023 CBC Invitational. Alyssa Hagewood opened with a +13 85 and trails the leader by eight shots entering the second round. Laney Crutchfield is in a tie for third after posting an opening round 90. Abby Kirby shot a 110 on the day.

Athlete of the Week

• St. Louis, Mo., March 13 — The American Midwest Conference (AMC) announced their weekly awards, and four CBC athletes were selected. A.J. Serrano was named AMC baseball player of the week, while Josh Brown was named AMC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, Ally Swaim earned AMC women’s track athlete of the week and Ashleigh Gross-Mitchell earned AMC women’s field athlete of the week.
