LEAVE IT TO CLEAVER: Where Do You Look?

“I lift my eyes to you, the one enthroned in heaven. Like a servant’s eyes on his master’s hand, like a servant girl’s eyes on her mistress’s hand, so our eyes are on the Lord our God until he shows us favor” (Psa. 123:1-2 CSB).

A little while ago, I visited one of the presidential libraries near me. In the museum was a replica of the oval office. Everything was exactly as it was when the president sat there. I sat in the big chair behind the impressive desk to have my picture made for friends to see. I could only imagine the choices made in that Oval Office to direct the many moving parts of this country and even the world. It is certainly a place where powerful decisions are made, decisions that routinely affect the daily life of this planet’s inhabitants.

There is One enthroned in Heaven who exerts more power than the president who sits in the Oval Office behind the big desk, seated in the big chair. As we go to worship, even before we get to the church house, let us lift our eyes to this place — and especially to this One. The Lord is enthroned in Heaven with powerful myriads and myriads of angelic hosts to do His bidding.

The true servant looks for direction from his master. The devoted servant is comfortable with the support her mistress provides. They know the nuances of the master as he directs them with a move of his hand or a nod of her head. May we be that kind of servant man or woman who looks to Him to give us favor as we come to His place to worship and serve Him.
